Pediatric Trauma - Management of the Pediatric Trauma Patient
Signs of herniation syndrome:
- Dilated and unreactive pupils - unilateral or bilateral
- Decorticate or decebrate posturing
- Cushing’s Triad– hypertension, bradycardia, and irregular respirations
Management includes:
- Mild hyperventilation - Goal ETCO2: 30 - 35 mmHg
- If available, give mannitol. Note this may take 15-30 minutes to work
- Treat seizures
Transport the patient to an appropriate health-care facility as soon as possible
