Management of Near Drowning
- Initial treatment on scene is the most important predictor of patient survival.
- Management of near drowning victims includesl:
- Opening and positioning airway while maintaining cervical immobilization if neck trauma is suspected.
- Suction as needed.
- Determine need for advanced airway (e.g., supraglottic device, endotracheal airway intubation).
- Begin ventilations as soon as possible.
- Continue resuscitation efforts of pulseless and apneic patients, including effective CPR, vascular access, drug therapy and cardiac monitoring.
- Transport to an appropriate facility should be started as soon as possible.
