Management of Near Drowning

  • Initial treatment on scene is the most important predictor of patient survival.
  • Management of near drowning victims includesl:
    • Opening and positioning airway while maintaining cervical immobilization if neck trauma is suspected.
    • Suction as needed.
    • Determine need for advanced airway (e.g., supraglottic device, endotracheal airway intubation).
    • Begin ventilations as soon as possible.
    • Continue resuscitation efforts of pulseless and apneic patients, including effective CPR, vascular access, drug therapy and cardiac monitoring.
  • Transport to an appropriate facility should be started as soon as possible.
