Disaster Triage Example

Triage is a systematic methodology for sorting injured people into groups based on their need or benefit from immediate medical treatment. Triage is most often used in cases where the number of casualties outweighs the number of healthcare resources. This process prioritizes casualties by severity of their condition and maintains the goal of doing the "Greatest good for the greatest number." The most commonly used algorithm for pediatric patients is the JumpSTART method. JumpSTART evaluates three physiologic indicators to determine the severity of the casualty's injuries. The mnemonic R P M will help you remember the systematic order of the evaluation. R represents respiration, P represents perfusion and M represents the casualty's mental status. The patameter values are different from those used in START due to the physiologic differences between children and adults.
