Management of Child Abuse


The first step in the management of a child who is a victim of abuse is to ensure the safety of responders and the child.



  • Assess and treat the child for any life-threatening injuries.
  • Document findings and witness accounts of the injury.
  • Notify law enforcement and child protective services.
  • Do not leave child alone with caretakers.
  • Transport the patient to an appropriate hospital and report concerns of maltreatment to hospital staff.
