Burn - Types


Burns are the third leading cause of injury-related deaths of children age 9 and younger. These injuries can affect all organ systems depending on the type, size and severity of the burn. Types of burn include thermal, chemical, electrical and radiation.

  • Scalds from hot liquids (younder children).
  • Flame burns (older children and teens).
  • Immersion burns (usually associated with child abuse).
  • Usually caused by strong acids or bases, caustic compounds.
  • Usually caused by a shock or an uncontrolled short circuit.
  • May produce no external burns, but can create significant internal injury and cardiac arrhythmias.
  • Exposure to UV light, most common is sunburn.
  • Also caused by exposure to radioactive materials.
