The Ongoing Exam

  • Ongoing exam should be completed:
    • At regular intervals (typically every 5 minute).
    • New intervention or treatment is initiated.
    • Any change in patient condition.
  • Ongoing assessment should include:
    • Cardiac monitoring - pulse oximetry - End-tidal CO2 detection.
    • Evaluation of temperature and blood glucose.
  • Clinical interventions take precedence over performing additional assessment components.
  • Repeat the detailed patient assessment, including vital signs and a Pediatric Glasgow Coma Scale.

Assessment of the patient is a continuous process. The patient should be reassessed during transport approximately every five minutes, with any change in patient condition and after any treatment or intervention. Reassess for improvement or deterioration, as well as for effectiveness of interventions. The ongoing assessment should include the use of cardiac monitoring, pulse oximetry, end-tidal CO2 detection and evaluation of temperature and blood glucose. Critical interventions take precedence over performing additional assessment components. Repeat the detailed patient assessment including vital signs and Pediatric Glagow Coma Scale.
