Secondary Assessment

  • Once the ABCDEs are completed and any identifiable life treats have been addressed, a secondary assessment should be performed.
  • The secondary assessment consists of:
    • Obtaining a set of vital signs.
    • A detailed, systematic head-to-toe examination.
  • A definitive treatment plan should be made based on injuries and findings.
  • Critical interventiions should take priority over additional patient assessments.
  • If a decision has been made to transport the patient, the secondary assessment should be completed en route to the hospital.
