Assessing the Back


  • Assess the back as the patient is rolled and placed on the backboard.
  • Evaluate the patient's back for the following signs of injury:
    • Bruising.
    • Penetrating injury.
    • Deformity.
    • Presacral edema.
    • Point tenderness of the midline spine.

It is important to assess the back for injury. The best time is when the patient is being placed on a backboard. Ensure that the patient is logrolled as one unit to minimize spinal movement. Evaluate the patient's back for the following signs of injury: bruising, penetrating injury, deformity, presacral edema and point tenderness anywhere along the mid-line spine.
