Data from the Centers for Disease Control from 1999 to 2007 found that in the U.S., the most common cause of injury related death in children age 1-4 years old is accidents involving motor vehicles followed closely by drowning. In the 5-9 years age group, motor vehicle accidents again account for the majority of injury related deaths. The second leading cause is injury related to fire or burns. For the 10-14 year old age group, accidents involving motor vehicles was responsible for the majority of injury related deaths. Suicide was the second leading cause in this age group followed closely by drowning and homicide.
