It is time to review the four classic left sided valve murmurs. Classic mitral regurgitation is holosystolic, plateau-shaped, high frequency and is best heard at the apex with firm pressure on the diaphragm.
Aortic stenosis also occurs in systole, is crescendo-decrescendo, mid frequency and is best heard at the upper right sternal edge using the diaphragm.
Aortic regurgitation occurs in diasole, is decrescendo, high frequency and best heard at the mid left sternal edge with firm pressure on the diaphragm.
Mitral stenosis also occurs in diastole, is of variable configuration, low frequency and best heard at the apex with light pressure on the bell.
