These are graphic examples of the auscultatory findings of mitral regurgitation of increasing severity. The holosystolic plateau-shaped murmur alone is consistent with mild mitral regurgitation. When a third heart sound is added, the combination is consistent with moderate mitral regurgitation. Finally, when a mid diastolic rumble is also added, the combination is consistent with severe mitral regurgitation.
